Run Your Own Business

A lot of people decide to get into plumbing so they can become self-employed and control their own destiny. In reality the bulk of new career plumbers enter the domestic market working predominantly by and for themselves. It's a sensible direction to take as there's plenty of money and jobs available for the right people.

A lot of work will come from friends of people you've done a good job for. People like to recommend great service. Working for yourself means getting on well with everyone around you. Getting along well with just one person may lead to many lucrative contracts. Courtesy and respect can go an awful long way.

Trades-people who work on commercial projects are generally employed daytime hours, Monday to Friday. You'd be wise to open that up a little though if you plan to work for yourself in private housing. Working people will want to get to know you first before leaving you in their homes unaccompanied.

Varied and Satisfying Work

There's a good deal of security when you've got the right plumbing skills. You'll be able to turn your hand to any number of jobs. The work is very satisfying, as you're either seeing a job through from beginning to end, or solving problems for people when emergencies occur. Every day brings new experiences and challenges, so you never need to be bored, and you're not restricted to working in one place all the time.

If you're going to set yourself up as a business, you'll have to learn a thing or two about costing out jobs. Naturally this means budgeting in all your own costs as well as labour and materials. It sounds complicated, but it's quite straightforward really. Business management is included in the coursework with some commercial trainers.

The Right Course For You...

City & Guilds certification courses can be studied in both private colleges and state ones. Teenagers straight out of school usually aim to combine a technical college course with commercial employment to complete NVQ certifications.

On the other hand, adult students who are looking to change careers tend to train part time. This is where the private training companies score best, as they offer flexible programmes with courses that will cover the needs of the domestic plumbing market.

Students will progress through their training quicker with commercial companies, so although the fees are more expensive, they're in a position to start earning money much faster.

Ancillary Training

When you do your training course, you'll learn all about common plumbing processes and the key principles you need to know. But if you increase your skill-set you can take on many more roles. If you take Part P for example you'll comply with the regulations for domestic electrical work. It's a big positive to have several strings to your bow. Your customer-base will broaden, and the jobs will be more profitable. There'll be no waiting around for bathroom fitters or tilers if you can do the work yourself - and the customer will be much less inconvenienced.

In conclusion, broad-based commercial plumbing courses are the quickest and most efficient route into the self-employed domestic market.
