Careers As A Gym/Sports Personal Trainer...

The health and fitness training market covers a very broad spectrum. But don't spend too much money and effort restricting yourself to one narrow sector before checking out what kind of customer base you could attract. That said, the desire for optimum health and peak fitness is growing everywhere. Which means you've got every opportunity to do well if you have a passionate desire to do so.

What's The Right Training?

The first thing to stress when looking at getting your own training sorted is that not all colleges and training companies provide like for like courses. So treat your research as an object lesson in what you, the customer, needs most. Spend time looking around at what's on offer - a morning surfing the net will throw up a great deal about which courses and certificates are most widely respected. Each time you refresh this page you'll see different companies offering training and advice - take a look at them and make notes on each to make comparisons for yourself.

Spoilt for Choice?

Maybe you've decided that a career in fitness training would suit you, but you're not sure where to specialise. Here are a few things to think about... Fitness training or instruction is in itself a multi-faceted discipline, with a considerable amount of information to take on board. Working on a client's cardiovascular techniques is not what fitness training is all about - naturally that will come into it, particularly for personal coaches and those training in the gym. But there's much more than that to work on.

There's a good deal of science involved in being a fitness pro. There's psychology, kinesiology, anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to learn. Next comes sports injuries, massage and first aid. And use of equipment, workout routines and strength programmes. Consider also health and safety, computer user skills and client appraisals. On top of all that, those who choose to become self-employed (and many personal trainers are) will need to know how to produce a business plan, attract clients, understand the law and deal with finance and business banking. What a list!

Start Small and Grow...

Relax - you can get started without knowing everything about everything, and many people carve out a great niche for themselves by learning a lot about one specialist area.

You could choose weight issues and diet. All food contains nutrients of some sort - study nutrition to learn about which foods do what for us and why. Then learn about digestion, and what factors affect our metabolic rate. Move onto weight management and you'll learn about the energy value of food, and the effect of lifestyle on diet. Also under the umbrella of nutrition is balancing dieting with the right training routine for healthy weight loss.

There's Personal Training for those with good confidence and motivational skills. Personal trainers need to have a good grasp of the body's structure and composition. Ensure that any training you do covers this in detail.

If you have a real interest in working out and currently visit the gym 3 or 4 times a week, then perhaps gym instruction is for you. Training will include scientific theory, practical application and standard procedures when working in a gymnasium. All gym members need to be assessed by a professional, and have a programme designed specifically for them. A good training course will cover this in detail. In addition you'll learn the ins and outs of exercise equipment, the science behind different types of exercises, and training skills and techniques.

Extra Strings To Your Bow...

Your career as a fitness trainer could be boosted by having a supplemental skill in the prevention and treatment of injuries. If this interests you, you might also consider rehabilitation therapy for clients who've suffered injuries, along with sports massage.

You could find some training on how to assess and measure an assortment of key indicators. We're talking about factors that can risk heart disease, cholesterol, blood pressure, body fat etc.
